| The Irish Consul General, who is based in New York City in the Ireland House, was the guest of honor at a reception at the headquarters in New York City. He has been promoted to a position in Brussels and leaves after a three-year assignment here.
At the reception, which was wall-to-wall guest, with several Philadelphians in attendance. JOHN CORCORAN, well-known labor lawyer was there with daughter BETH and son JOHN. Former member of the Delaware River Port Authority GENE McCAFFERY was there with his lovely wife JOAN.
Back when TIP 0'NEILL was Speaker of the House Congress appropriated thirty million dollars as an Irish American Development Fund. GENE was one of the original directors to determine how the money would be spent. Of course, to make sure the legislation passed the same thing was done for Italy and Poland.
Also present were Judge of the Common Pleas Court PAM DEMBE and husband DAVE and Judge of the Common Pleas GENE MAIER and his wife CONNIE. Also in attendance Municipal Court Judge FELICE R. STACK and from the Irish American Chamber of Commerce, the President of the organization BILL MCLAUGHLIN and in addition the president of the A.0.H. Organization BOB
GEISSLER.
Also, President of the Brehon Law Society TOM HUNT.
Just down the street on Park Avenue is the Episcopalian Church Saint Barts. As part of the church there is an elevated patio, which turns out to be a restaurant with unusual ambiance. After the reception, seen holding hands over dinner and a bottle of wine were the said Judge MAIER and his lovely wife CONSTANCE.
The most convenient way (and the most inexpensive) to go to the Big Apple is to drive to Trenton and take a commuter train to New York. It's about a fourth of what the Metroliner costs.
The recent action of the Majority Leader of the State House of Representatives JOHN PERZEL in responding to Philadelphia's pleas to the state for help in funding the school system was to introduce legislation providing zero state dollars to the city and instead diverting Parking Authority revenues from the city operating budget to the school budget. This is a bizarre response made all the more so when you consider he is a Philadelphia legislator.
Senator VINCENT FUMO on the floor of the Senate refers to Mr. PERZEL as "Landslide Louie," This is a reference to PERZEL being re-elected by less than 100 votes in the last election. Apparently he is receiving a different message from the one his constituents are sending to him.
PETER V. MARKS SR. who represent several Labor Unions and his wife GINNY just got back from Pittsburgh where they attended the graduation ceremony for their son PETER JR. who received a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a Major in the U.S. Army and is married with four kids. When he is not in Pittsburgh he is in San Antonio, Texas where he is running the Hospital Systems Records for the Army.
In the area of Labor Unions, Teamsters Union Local 115, formerly headed by JOHN MORRIS is now officially out of trusteeship and under the elected leadership of long time staffer JIM SMITH. You may recall that MORRIS fired SMITH two years ago.
In the elections for International Officers there is opposition within the Teamsters and Musicians but not within the Hotel employees. The incumbents are all expected to win.
In the election held for the officers in Local 274 Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees all of the incumbents were elected handily.
In Philadelphia, the officers for the Musicians Union won re-election. While in Atlantic City there's a whole new slate of new officers.
In Local 1776 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union it looks like WENDELL YOUNG III, is headed for re-election without opposition. He is now the longest serving labor leader in the Philadelphia area. |
