Welfare Deadline Changes

There is good news out there for welfare recipients who were in danger of losing their welfare benefits March 3rd.
State Sen. Shirley M. Kitchen reports from Harrisburg that March 3 will not be the cut off deadline for welfare recipients as set by Act 35 of 1996.

Kitchen said new regulations developed last month by the state's Department of Welfare will be giving 12,000 families potentially affected by the cuts more time to find a job or to see if they fall under exceptions.

"It's important for individuals to know the March 3 deadline has changed. For some," she said. "For some it may just mean doing more community service to not lose their benefits. "

Kitchen said the new regulations must be in place before anyone is cut from benefits. She believes they will be adopted no earlier than June.
