Thank You, Jannie!

Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell has called City Council’s attention to the role community newspapers play in this city with a resolution which she introduced and which the Council passed.

The resolution designated April as Community Weekly Month.

In her resolution, Blackwell stated, “Media mergers continue to threaten the integrity of local news coverage … but Philadelphia has a rich and dedicated network of non-corporate, home-grown media; and these local news outlets serve our community with a special excellence and commitment;

“Be it resolved that April 2012 is declared Local, Independent Media Month.”

The Philadelphia Public Record was among those commended. Also thanks to Hal Rosenthal, who first suggested the idea to the good Councilwoman.
