Kids Bring Home Gold Medals At S. Philly Olympics

BY RORY McGLASSON/  The London Olympics officially opens today in the United Kingdom, but for some South Philadelphia kids, they have already have a gold medal.

Youngsters brought home gold, silver and bronze medalsTuesday at the Kiddie Olympics held at the Christian Street YMCA, 1701 Christian Street. Councilman Kenyatta Johnson hosted the annual three-hour event, which featured relay races, long jumps, shot put, flying discs, sprints and a tug-of-war that featured the Councilman. “It’s all about making sure our young kids understand how important it is to stay fit and healthy,” said Johnson.

Johnson started the “Kiddie Olympics” when he was the State Representative in the 186th Legislative Dist. Councilman Johnson, clad in a Nike shirt that read  “Holdin It Down”, joined in the games as he lent his arm in the tug-of-war event.
