2ND DIST. City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson welcomes an estimated crowd of over 3,000 job-seekers who lined up at job fair he sponsored, where they met with potential employers at Phila. Navy Yard. However, Gov. Tom Corbett says they’re out of work because they all flunk drug tests. How will this statement fly in 2014? Photo by Rory McGlasson
There will be people who see his statement as being truly reflective of our culture and the growing epidemic of casual and hardcore users of both licit and illicit drugs. Then there are others who see him lying his way out of the predicaments that have seen the Commonwealth plummet as a job-creator under his administration.
State Sen. Tina Tartaglione is among those, and has blasted him in a report. She has been joined by her colleague Shirley Kitchen and State Treasurer Rob McCord, among many other Democrats. McCord’s name is often mentioned as a potential challenger to Corbett in 2014.
Corbett continues to look like a lame duck, which is why there is a growing interest in the gubernatorial primary – much more so than the current one, which has already been decided for the most part.
Corbett has earned a roasting in national media for his indiscreet language. He can count on one sure thing: once given a juicy story like this, the cable news shows will go back to this well again and again and again in 2014.
Based on Gov. Corbett’s comments, the majority of the people waiting in this line are on drugs are cannot reasonably assume a job because of some personal failing. Try eplaining that to these individuals who desperately want to gain some traction in this fractured economy.
I find his comments to be consistent with his policies from the beginning of his term. He got rid of abultBasic health insurance as soon as he was elected. This program was intended to help uninsured Pennsylvanians to maintain health insurance during periods of unemployment or underemployment.
Because the economic downturn is affecting so many people, I think the Governor’s words can come back to haunt him. The people agreeing with his statements are the Marcellus Shale beneficiaries who will sing his praises until the next tax break.
