Council President DARRELL CLARKE says nine parties have asked about purchase of seven shuttered city schools. The fact Council was contacted, and not the Mayor or School District, seems to say the nine had MORE FAITH in Council. Council’s efforts to sell the buildings display NOBLE intentions. While a $100 million offer for 30 schools might be TOO LOW – depending on what schools they want – thanks are in order for CLARKE. University City and William Penn Schools, as well as the luxury district headquarters on Broad Street, are READY for sale NOW! Sell them now! Council hearings on the School District’s ABILITY and EXPERTISE to sell the schools should be held. The district’s call for public involvement can take a LOT OF TIME. The public is less against a sale and more interested in proposed USE. TOO MUCH vetting can SCARE AWAY a buyer, and leave schools to ROT or be broken into. There is no reason for the district to walk away from an offer!! Now the Mayor is calling the $100M bidder – that is TOO MANY hands in the pot and seems a back-door approach (?). Will Room 215 take blame if the sale fails? Does the Mayor want credit for the sale? Tip O’NEILL used to say, “It does not matter who gets credit, AS LONG AS IT IS DONE!…” Advocates AGAINST the sale of the School District $8m artworks, say it is too small an amount to help school kids. BALONEY! Contrast that to the “good” citizens who said school kids were deprived of books by the $3.8 million total salary of clerks in the Board of Revision.
LINEAR PAVING of Philly Streets is supposed to be cost-effective for the paver. It is also ANNOYING for the resident. You have to move the car for the street preparation, then wait what seems an interminable time for the repaving. The repaving is cost-effective if many blocks of the same street are done in one day. That will not always happen, so your car gets the undercarriage banged about and maybe damaged – or a case of wheel alignment being lost. And the street near me seems to get paved EVERY few years? Why – when others need paving more? District COUNCILMAN needs to monitor!
Remember when Councilman Mark SQUILLA fought AVI alone? AVI, as crafted, did not raise taxes in many other districts, so there was no fight in Council. If the City needs more revenue next year, will they reconfigure the GMA assessment sections? KEEP WATCH. And will SQUILLA vote for fellow Council Members if they are A.V.I.-HIT? The answer is yes….Councilman David OH gets space in area papers where he says that he is AGAINST Council Members NOT having to resign to run for other offices…. JANNIE BLACKWELL again hit the nail on the head when she came out against the sale of City TAX LIENS as a NEIGHBORHOOD DISRUPTER. Bill GREEN says to do it; but he should look for a BETTER vehicle.
The daily press has GREATLY improved sports reporting with more high-school sports news! The OTHER incubator of sports GREATS are the 30-some neighborhood gyms dedicated to boxing and mixed martial arts for youth, as well as the wrestling programs offered by the CZW League. How about publicity for them? The public cannot keep current on an area where they have an interest, without media help.
WHAT A LOSS: Michael J. O’SHEA, MANY TIMES decorated soldier who served in Vietnam. He just won his disability fight with the VA, and passed. Loving sister ANN BROWN was an angel who cared for him. Of his life the Almighty could easily say: “Well done, O good and faithful soldier. Well done….” Bob BERARDI, one-time leader of the 39th Ward, has passed. Bob worked for a major corporation, until the Wall Street press exposed that he was an executive and ward leader. Shocking then, not today.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ACE photographer of the Philly Tribune, Robert MENDELSOHN. Bob resembles Ernest HEMINGWAY. He has many fans – all female. And birthday greetings to lovely and ageless Audrey THORNTON, Founder and President of the Belmont Mansion Underground Railway Museum! And SIERRA STREET, Common Pleas judge candidate, has her birthday ON ELECTION DAY, which means GOOD LUCK for her. On that day a party will be held for her at Cavanaugh’s University City. Bravo!… How about the birthday duo of Flo PAULING, 34th Ward power Committeewoman, and her daughter JIHAN as well!
Sen. Pat Toomey is finding out about politics in Washington. It is not the same as the old days; got to be more centrist, aye…. Store of the month is Steve Lodge’s PRYOR Alternator-Starter rebuilders on Torresdale Avenue. Opened in 1956, it features a collection of old highway markers, antique tools and parts dating to the Pierce Arrow, and memorabilia from when driving was MOTORING.
KING ARTHUR, noted DJ of our area, has a CAMELOT of his own on 8th Street. He performed well at the Democrat JEFF-JAX Party…. Now that Democrats have taken the registration lead in Delaware Co., it is worth noting that the PIONEER Democrat in Delaware Co. was SEAMUS BONNER, who missed winning a legislative seat by a hair. Today, the GOP political radio commercials attack Dems. Is this a sign of concern?
Gov. CHRISTIE is going to win. So it is EASY for daily media to endorse him. The Christie campaign has big bucks, and did not really need to flatten the opposition so much… The New Jersey high-court ruling on gay marriage continues to box in Gov. Corbett. And it all STARTED with MONTCO Register of Wills Bruce HANES. And Corbett is rethinking the asset test for food stamps. In the meantime, many have suffered, Guv. The rich have a DISCONNECT from understanding the plight of the poor.
State Rep. Steve KINSEY held a great Medicare enrollment seminar…. The Big DINNER for District Council 33 leader PETE MATTHEWS went very well! A citation from the Mayor arrived, and some members said, “Tear it up!… Sen. TED CRUZ – Does he remind any of you of Sen. Joe MC CARTHY?
We have debt because we collect 81 CENTS for every dollar spent. BUSH was told you cannot cut taxes and start a war…. Economists say that the USA seems to get along with gasoline at $3-4.00 a gallon. BUT WE WOULD DO BETTER, and the economy would take off at say $2.00-$2.50 a gallon. We are AWASH in newfound-shale oil. So why can’t we lower the price of gas? Because the price is set on the world exchanges, the rich get richer. The USA should set our OWN PRICE!
The LUCIEN BLACKWELL Boxing Eliminations over last weekend sprouted future champions and good citizens in our youth. Please support this program! The 10th Anniversary of the IRISH MEMORIAL renews, thanks to Irish Americans as America-builders and cohesive backers of what is right and good.
