SOUTH PHILLY: Kickball, Soccer Takes Over Marconi Park

Filed under: Arts and Entertainment,Entertainment,South Philadelphia,South Philly |

PSN (Philadelphia Sports Network) and PSSC (Philadelphia Sport & Social Club) are the two primary for-profit organizations that dominate most of the fields and facility permits in the city’s parks.

However, for the next 9 weeks, Stonewall Kickball secured a permit to take over Marconi Plaza at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue.

On Sunday, April 27, they were joined by former Councilman Jim Kenney (and mayoral candidate), Councilman Mark Squilla and Nellie Fitzpatrick, the Director of LGBT Affairs for the Office of the Mayor.

Members, friends and allies of the LGBT community are joining forces to literally kick the ball. Kickball is a playground game and league game, similar to baseball, invented in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. It is similar to baseball where players kick the ball to bat it instead of using bats, making it more accessible and safe.

The whole neighborhood was buzzing with what started with a 200 member group the first year (held down at FDR Park) which rapidly expanded into the second year with 800 members. A total of 32 teams raise money for William Way, Giovanni’s Room (Philly AIDS Thrift) and more charity groups.

And on Saturdays at Marconi Plaza, you will see small children playing soccer at the park through Soccer Shots, a national program teaching children ages 2-8 the game of soccer. Trademarks are the developmentally appropriate curriculum used that emphasizes creative play, enjoyment of sport and character building lessons. Sessions range from 30-40 minutes in length, and our coaches are energetic and enthusiastic individuals who love working with kids of all ages.
