Running Like Rocky For 24 Hours

Sadly, there is a common story in the world of boxing.
Boxer fights many years, bringing home nice paydays; however, come retirement, that money can disappear very quickly. Boxers have no pension plan, and far too often, no formal education to prepare for their lives after boxing.

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the Veteran Boxers Association realizes this fact, and has annually been awarding scholarships to boxers, so that they may be just as successful out of the ring once they retire.
One of the VBA’s board members, South Philly’s Fred Druding, Jr., will attempt to run 24 hours in an effort to create awareness and funds for these boxing scholarships. This is a passionate issue for Druding, as he has seen too many boxers in this situation, and hopes this endeavor could be a first step toward solving this situation.
The Philly Running Community is currently in a charity challenge as part of the upcoming Philadelphia Mayor’s Cup. The challenge pits virtually every running club in the city not only against each other in athletic competition, but also in the challenge of who can raise the most funds for the charity of their choice.
The Fishtown Beer Runners, of whom Druding is also a member, have selected the VBA Scholarship fund as their charity. Stakes are also higher, thanks to the generosity of Blue Cross & Blue Shield, who will donate $2,000 to the charity of the running club who raises the most funds.

Here’s how it works. Starting on Saturday, Jul. 18 at 10 a.m. and ending on Sunday, Jul. 19, at 10 a.m., Druding will attempt to run as part of the “Stroehmann Back on My Feet in 24 Philadelphia” Ultra-Marathon. He is asking for donations to the VBA Scholarship Fund based on the number of miles he completes. All donations are on the honor system, and you may cap your donation at whatever you like, but shortly following the in24 race, the number of miles Druding completed will be posted via Facebook and then you make the appropriate donation based on your pledge.
Simply go to www.PhillyMayorsCup.com, click on charities, then click on “Fishtown Beer Runners support the VBA Scholarship Fund”. Of course, if you simple just want to support the cause, and want to make a donation now regardless of how many miles Druding completes in the 24 hours, you may do so, as the charity challenge is already underway. All donors to the VBA Scholarship Fund will immediately be recognized on the Mayor’s Cup website and also in a thank-you ad which will be published in the Philadelphia Public Record at the conclusion of the campaign.
