They call him Mr. South Philly.
And there are few contenders who dare challenge this title.
Russell Shoemaker, Sr. was formerly employed with the South Philadelphia Review for a year, which has undergone a major change and is being taken over by a firm not located in South Philadelphia.
Broad Street Media, the publisher of the Northeast Times and other local weekly publications, purchased Philadelphia Weekly and the South Philly Review earlier this year.
The Review is a non-union newspaper with major circulation problems, whereas the Public Record can be found in stores, newsboxes and more local locations.
“Our plan is to fatten the South Philly edition. More pages, a better connection with the community and the police, because right now the Police Department is all about community policing – one big, happy family,” said Shoemaker.
Shoemaker lives in South Philly and spent 17 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He has four children and 11 grandchildren, keeping him plenty busy.
“I also do 50 hours a month volunteering and sit on four boards,” he said.
He sits on the 1st Dist. Police Dept. Advisory Council as South Division Representative for Police Districts and the 1st, 3rd and the 17th Dists. He is a director of new membership for South Philadelphia Business Association and also sits on the advisory council of Bethanna Community Umbrella Agency.
As if that is not enough, he also heads two police banquets every year – the annual 1st Dist. banquet in May and the annual South Division Police banquet for Officer of the Year.
With lots of trade knowledge after working many jobs, Shoemaker has bright plans for the Public Record’s growth.
“We’ll be working on newest edition online advertising and offering amazing rates,” he said. “We are also open to featuring a spotlight on new businesses and restaurants each month.”
And feel free to reach out to him for coverage.
“I am Mr. South Philly. After all, South Philly is one big family.…” he said.
