Hundreds of people attended the dedication and naming of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University on Oct. 13, in tribute to the late Lewis Katz who loved his alma mater. Katz had pledged $25 million to Temple University the year before his untimely death in a plane crash. His son Drew has accepted a position on the Temple Board of Trustees, a position which his father had held for years.

Dr. Larry Kaiser, the CEO of the Temple Health System and Dean of the medical school, and Dr. Neil Theobald, chaired the dedication ceremony, which included tributes to Lewis Katz by Senator Bob Casey, Senator Cory Booker, Patrick O’Connor, who chairs the university’s Board of Trustees, Pennsylvania Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine, and a medical school candidate, Adys Mendizabal. Then Drew Katz, his wife Rachel and his sister Melissa Katz Silver unveiled a large painting of Lewis Katz which will hang in the lobby. A powerful video with actual footage of Lewis Katz’s speeches and philosophy, along with photos from his childhood and the various phases of his career, as attorney, banker, team owner, and other businesses, moved many to tears. Then the assembled adjourned to a tent for lunch and a performance by Lewis Katz’s favorite singing group, Straight No Chaser.
