Henon Recycles Electronics

The reason why recycling is so important is that it prevents pollution, reduces the need to harvest new raw materials, saves energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, saves money, reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and allows products to be used to their fullest extent. Recycling is good for the environment; in a sense, we are using old and waste products that are of no use and then converting them back to the same new products. Since we are saving resources and are sending less trash to the landfills, it helps in reducing air and water pollution.

Because tires are made of natural rubber and plastic, it’s easy to miss just how much they contribute to pollution in our oceans. Small bits of degraded plastic from tire wear pervade the environment, including the oceans, researchers are discovering. Recycling rubber tires means that millions of scrap tires are no longer dumped in landfills, or left illegally in lakes, abandoned lots, along the side of the road and in sensitive habitats. Recycling saves impressive amounts of energy, which ultimately reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Councilmember Bobby Henon (6th District), 2nd from R, organized a document shredding and electronics recycling event in the Lincoln High School parking lot on Saturday.

Constituents remained in their cars, masked with their goods to be recycled in the rear of their cars, which Sanitation workers then unloaded. They took anything smaller than a washer/dryer. Photo from Henon’s Facebook page
